WGA tourneys ruled the greens and fairways

The Big Canoe Women’s Golf Association (WGA) 18-Hole players and 9-Hole players crowned their club champions in September. For the third consecutive year, Ellen MacArther took home the top prize as Club Champion. Janet Vandenbark won the Net Championship. The Club Championship is open to all Big Canoe women residents. Eighteen-Hole flight winners, gross and net, were Ellen MacArthur and Carol McClain, 1st flight; Sandy Towle and Cindy Marushak, 2nd flight; Janet Vandenbark and Louise Dale, 3rd flight; and Jackie Murdock and Ginny Shoup, 4th flight.

Nine-Hole player Elise McBryde won the top trophy on September 21, and Pam Johnson was net 9-Hole winner. Flight winners were Elise McBryde, Joyce Daniels, Lynda Waters and Pam Johnson. October is traditionally the last month of the Big Canoe Women’s Golf Association season, and that will also be true in 2020 with closing day on October 28.

Events in October include Monday play days for 9-Hole golfers and a couple two-day contests for 18-Holers. On October 7 we will hold Best Out, Best In (Nassau) and will also hold the qualifying round for Last Woman Standing. Prior to teeing off for the play day there will be a sign up sheet for those wanting to participate in Last Woman Standing. October 14 there will be two WGA events going on simultaneously, a regular play day and the Last Woman Standing shoot out.

Last Woman Standing will test the endurance of the field with those qualifying, competing, and being eliminated, one hole at a time until one golfer stands alone. October 21 is a regularly scheduled play day. The Big Canoe Cup will be held October 16 and 17. Eighteen-Hole players have been accumulating points  throughout the season by participating in play days, tournaments and by winning and placing in flights. The top 16 point getters, plus two “captain’s picks” from the remaining players, will be placed on either the Eagle Team or the Bear Team and will play four nine-hole contests. The two golfers with highest point totals are designated captains and will draft their teams.

The WGA Charity Week kicked off on August 31 with a 9-Hole play day and the September 2 18-Hole three Queens and a King competition. By the end of the week of play, a check was presented to Wellness Collaborative President Shiraz Alikhan and board director Christine Flaherty for $3,302.00.

“The Wellness Collaborative is a very important ‘inside the gates’ nonprofit that has grown over the last five years from a grassroots/volunteer organization to a full-fledged nonprofit supporting the health and wellness needs of our community. WGA golf is glad to support it,” said Janet Vandenbark, WGA president. “A big thank you to our 9-Hole play day chairs, Lynda Waters and Joyce Fitch, for their support, and to 18-Hole play day chairs Katie Lane and Leslie Grogan for the fun format of three Queens and one King coupled with putting and chipping contests.”

Nine-Hole WGA members held their Ringer tournament on August 10 and 17. Winners of the event were Lynn Cates, Susan Rolader, Donna Brown and Pam Johnson. Eighteen-Hole WGA members played the Tri-Member tournament on August 19. The Tri-Member teams composed of A, B, and C players, were drawn at random at a “pick ‘em” party August 17. They then played three different six-hole formats. Overall winners of the Tri-Member were Martha Seferian, Ali Littley and Kim Haczynski.
