BCWGA Final Tournament Results of the 2022 Season

By Jocelyn Smith

The BCWGA closed out the 2022 season with several memorable events including the BCWGA Championship.

Weather finally cooperated for the rescheduled Bent Tree and Big Canoe Scramble last month and was enjoyed by many. The BCWGA would like to thank the wonderful ladies who hosted us at Bent Tree and put together a lovely luncheon to celebrate new friendships and the winners. First place went to Luzier/Dutton/Ford with a score of 38, second place to Goodman/Finlay/Stapleton/Shaeffer who came in at 42, and third place to McBryde/McClain/Girard/McMullen with a total score of 43.

Our last Nine, Sip, and Snack Partee event was a highlight in October and winners included the following top three teams: Lura Wright/Wendy King/Pam DePetro/Linda Yeakel, Mary Yolinsky/Heidi McClain, Colleen Adams/Cindy Metzler and Lyn Cates/Nancy Finlay/Elizabeth Thompson/Barbara Goodman. Thanks again to the ladies who provided ice cream enjoyed by all.

The BCWGA hosted our fall getaway trip to Brasstown Valley Resort for a two-day overnight trip that gave everyone a chance to relax and golf. After a frost delay both days, the weather quickly warmed up to make it a beautiful fall afternoon and fun for all.

The very competitive Aces & Graces tournament ended with a three-way tie for third place, and first place was taken by Pattillio/Sheridan/Calloway/Fuller, with second place winners including Fanas/Witt/Warenzak/McBryde. Men’s straightest drive went to Nick Warenzak and the women’s’ to Marilyn Green. Closet to the pin on #2 was awarded to Elise McBryde and David Pattillio on hole #9. Congratulations to all the winners!

Our highly anticipated and final tournament in October was the BCWGA Championship, and what a fantastically beautiful day it was. Congratulations to our champion, Debbie Howell! In addition, in Flight #1 First Place went to Heather Luzier and Second Place to Elise McBryde. First Place in Flight #2 was Carol Corbitt and in second place TyAnne Schmidt. Laura Smith also won Closest to the Pin.

The final play day event in November was the Blind Draw/Mystery Team. In memory of one of our beloved fellow members, Dottie Nix, a 21+ Ball Salute was held before the start of the play day as we gathered near the lake near Creek 9 to hit pink balls (Dottie’s favorite color). First Place of the event went to Donna Brown, Debbie Howell, Tyanne Schmidt and Jocelyn Smith with one under and in Second Place Ginny Saunders, Regina Chestnut, Lynda Waters and Marilyn Green at even par. In addition, several members were awarded prizes for most pars and birdies as well as special recognition to Kay Herndon for the most improved handicap over the course of the season.

It was bittersweet closing out the 2022 season, but throughout the year great memories and new friendships were formed and we look forward too many more in 2023. Please consider joining the “funnest” ladies golf group at Big Canoe for 2023. We welcome new members all year long to come out and play with us!

The BCWGA is a golfing organization with a 40+ year history. The group is open to any woman, aged 21 and over, who is either a property owner or a golf amenity member in good standing at Big Canoe. Members are afforded the opportunity to play nine or eighteen holes of golf in a relaxed atmosphere while having fun and simultaneously working to improve their skill set and handicap. The establishment of a USGA handicap is required of all members.

Activities and events are designed to promote a better understanding of the rules of golf and to improve the pace of play. Members work together to boost confidence on the course and encourage socialization with other women of similar skills. Integrity, respect for each other as well as the game of golf, and a firm sense of fellowship are key principles of the BCWGA.

We also would like to invite anyone interested in taking advantage of the best value to learn how to play golf at Big Canoe by signing up for Learning Ladies lessons with Joan Delk, one of Big Canoe’s professional golf instructors. You can also reach out to Cindy Metzler and TyAnne Schmidt, BCWGA Liaisons to the Learning Ladies.

Ladies of all levels of play are welcome to share the spirit and warmth that exemplifies BCWGA – “Ladies who just want to have fun playing golf.” For up-to-date information, please visit our website regularly, https://bcgc-bcwga.golfgenius.com.

New members are always welcome, no matter their skill level. The contacts for the group are Carolyn Witt (carolyn.witt.cw@gmail.com), BCWGA President, Elise McBryde (elisemcbryde@gmail.com), BCWGA Vice President and Christine Flaherty (christine.flaherty21@gmail.com), BCWGA Treasurer.
