Join the POA Election Committee

By Colin Bergen

Want to have an impact on Big Canoe? Are you interested in making sure the community’s voice is well-represented? Do you want to make new connections with our residents?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, consider serving on the POA Election Committee.

A committee of the POA Board of Directors, the Election Committee is responsible for conducting the annual election of the Board of Directors. Candidates for this committee can be full-time residents, part-time residents and non-resident lot owners.

“The Election Committee is part of what makes Big Canoe work,” says Bob Mackey, who recently served as the committee chair. “When you get people to step up and run, it’s very rewarding. It’s a great vantage point to get acquainted with Big Canoe.”

Responsibilities for committee members include:

Promoting the annual election campaign to community members
Qualifying candidates according to published requirements
If warranted by the number of candidates in the field, coordinating a primary election
Supervising the primary election cycle if needed
Actively encouraging community recruitment of candidates before and during the candidate qualification period
Coordinating any special election required because of a vacancy on the Board

Four to six individuals may be part of the Election Committee. Individuals from a diversity of backgrounds may are encouraged to submit applications.

The meeting dates have yet to be established, but members can expect the committee to be at its most busy from March through June, and September through the end of November. Members are expected to commit to two-year terms.

The slate for the committee is expected to be approved on March 31, so be sure to apply ASAP. Applications are available down below. For more information, email Mark Newton at DrMarkLNewton@gmail.com.
