A Glance at Big Canoe’s Year-Long 50th Anniversary Celebration

Big Canoe is celebrating its 50th anniversary in a big way. Throughout 2022, there will be several special events and activities to commemorate our community’s half century of memories, mountain views and more.

There’s a lot to look forward to this year, so here’s just a glimpse of some of what’s in store for the year. Keep an eye on this page as additional times, details, contact info and events will be added as they become available.

5:30-8:30 p.m. March 19, 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Party: This inaugural event, rescheduled from its original Dec. 31 date, will feature a screening of a Big Canoe documentary by Mark Green, a celebratory dinner, and performances by Brad Morgan at the reception and the band Fantastic Voyage later in the evening.

10 a.m. April 16, Easter Egg Hunt: Our 50th anniversary egg-centric event is at the Playfield with two designated egg-hunt areas – one for kids 4 and under and another for children 5 and up. Coffee and pastries will be provided.

4:30-6:30 p.m. April 21, Mountain Memories: This event will begin with a social gathering with Mark Green the program with a 14-minute documentary about Big Canoe. Kathleen Ingram, daughter of Ken Rice who was visiting as child before it was even called Big Canoe, will share stories along with longtime Big Canoe residents Gloria and Syl Harnesberger and local historian Jan Murphy. 2 p.m. May 17, Groovy Golf: The Golf Club will be hosting a nine-hole tournament with a seriously ’70s vibe. Music and drinks will be available. Prices to be announced.

June 1, Decades of Fashion: The Beach Club will be celebrating 50 years of fashion! Come dress in the style of your favorite decade, from the 70s to the present. There also will be a fashion show and specialty cocktails served. Additional details to come.

June 23, Plummer Cabin Talks: Come and listen to the history of the iconic Plummer Cabins. These 115 unique cabins were built in the 70s and designed to show off the beauty of mountain living.  Prices and meeting location to be announced.
