Big Canoe Package Facility to the rescue

While the Postal Facility is a long-standing gathering place that all Property Owners must navigate, it often poses numerous challenges for anyone seeking a package.

The POA aims to change that on Monday, May 31 with the launch of the new POA package facility in the lower Village Station across the street from the firehouse. The space, which over the decades has been home to various restaurants, a general store, a gas pump and an activity center for children, will rise again as a parcel pitstop housing all spill-over and oversized packages that won’t fit in the Postal Facility.

Property Owners will continue collecting their regular mail at the Postal Facility. When a large or excessive number of parcels arrive at the Postal Facility, a claim ticket will be put into a Property Owner’s Postal Facility mailbox. The packages can then be retrieved from the new package center.

The new package facility addresses numerous ongoing issues that were exacerbated by the glut of pandemic mail orders and the standard package inundation that happens every Christmas season.

Unlike the Postal Facility, the new pickup spot will also have staff working specific regular hours – 1-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday – designed to give Property Owners a better opportunity to collect their packages.

Big Canoe staffer Priscilla Jordan, a 27-year Postal Service veteran, will manage the new facility.

Women’s Fellowship invites you to breakfast

Big Canoe Chapel Women’s Fellowship invites all ladies in our community to a “Meet, Greet and Eat” complimentary breakfast on June 12 at the Chapel from 9 – 10:30 a.m.

This is a wonderful opportunity to discover the legacy of caring that drives the Chapel Women’s Fellowship to help those in our surrounding communities.

Along with helping others, the Fellowship presents programs and activities to draw women together for fun and meaningful times.

All who joined Women’s Fellowship in the last three years and those who are interested in learning more are invited.

Diamond Dog Park closed until May 24

Hey dog lovers of every size and breed – we mean dogs, not their keepers!

Just a reminder, Diamond Dog Park will be closed until May 24 so grass can grow and maintenance completed.

While this might be a bit of an inconvenience, it’s a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with the other dog parks in Big Canoe.

Take a walk in the fields of The Meadows or doggie play at Wildcat. Both offer room to romp and amenities for your pups.

Once Diamond Dog Park is back in service, the other two dog parks will undergo maintenance.

Pups and their ‘parents’ are invited to a ‘Pawty’

No bones about it! The Big Canoe Dog Park Social Club is having a “Pawty” on Thursday, May 27 at 5 p.m. at the Old Mulehouse in Jasper.

The Mulehouse Patio has been reserved for pups and their keepers with delicious human food on the menu and plenty of treats for the pups. What a pack of fun!

So tables can be set, let Sherry Evans know you’ll be barking with us by emailing her at srevans284@gmail.com.

Dogs should be leashed at the pawty to keep things somewhat restrained.

You don’t have to be an official member of the Dog Park Social Club to pawty with us, just identify as a canine cuddlier whether you own a dog (or a dog owns you) or not. Everybody is welcome, but make sure to let Sherry know you’ll be joining the pawty.

Big Canoe: Let’s get ready to summer!

Memorial Day weekend, that traditional opening to the summer season, has plenty to offer in Big Canoe with cookouts, pool openings, extended Clubhouse hours, and a host of hot-weather remedies to get things started.

Not lost on Big Canoe is the deeper significance of Memorial Day, which honors the military personnel who died in service of our country. Among the numerous planned activities that weekend is the placement of the veteran banners along Lake Petit Dam.

The three-day weekend also comes just as the community is reopening as the weather is warming up. What that means is there is no shortage of happenings. Among the upcoming events this weekend:

Pool openings – The curtains are officially raised on Big Canoe’s summer with the Saturday, May 29 opening of the pools both at the Beach Club and Wildcat Recreation Area. Both are fully staffed. Look for snacks and drinks to be served at the Beach Club, where patrons are allowed to bring in their own food and drinks – but no glassware.

On the subject of aquatic activities, the uncertainty around the timing of the completion of the Disharoon Lake drainage system has caused the closure of the Beach, inflatables and rockslide area for the Memorial Day weekend. The opening dates of those amenities are uncertain at this time.

The POA is investigating alternate locations to relocate the Beach Club’s watercraft, including kayaks, paddleboards and canoes, for later in the summer.

Clubhouse – First of all, the Clubhouse has extended its Sunday hours. Dining is now available until 7 p.m. on Sundays, with the last seating at 6 p.m. And remember to lock in a reservation by calling (706) 268-1253 or using the Open Table app when you sign onto bigcanoepoa.org.

The Clubhouse, normally closed for dining on Mondays, is open noon-6 p.m. on Monday, May 31 to better accommodate the three-day weekenders. In the outdoor dining tradition so associated with the holiday, the Clubhouse staff will host a cookout that day on the adjacent patio. Look for traditional grilled eats – think burgers, classic sides, etc. – to go along with the Clubhouse’s regular menu served from its regular kitchen.

In honor of those who served in our armed forces, the Clubhouse will leave a table open as a symbolic Memorial Day recognition to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Note that the Clubhouse will be closed on Tuesday, June 1.

Racquet Club – Look for tennis and pickleball round robin socials on Monday, May 31. This will feature rotating partners for play, so it’s a great way to meet new people and play with different partners. There will be prizes for the best and worst play.

With a limit of 32 tennis and 20 pickleball players, participants will arrive at 8:45 a.m. and play 9-11 a.m. The Racquet Club will then serve hamburgers and hot dogs at 11:30 a.m. to the players after the event.

Men’s Fellowship grill masters turn Playfield into cookout hotspot Saturday

While a Chapel Men’s Fellowship motto is “growing and learning and serving,” they’re taking the serving part to a new level this weekend.

From 4-7 p.m. Saturday, May 15, on the Playfield, the Men’s Fellowship is delivering a dining alternative to the Clubhouse, which is closed that day for an event. Hosting an old-school cookout, the Fellowship will offer fire-grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips and drinks in a sun-splashed, family-friendly setting. Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and hang out in the grassy expanse as we celebrate the long-overdue warm weather.

New Storage Yard and waste disposal station open

The new Borrow Pit Storage Facility was completed in April 2021 and is now open for business!
39 spaces are currently available for rent in the new facility and the new waste disposal station is now open.
Rental rates for both the current and new facility are:
10×20 $25/month or $250/year
15×30 $66/month or $660/year
20×40 $105/month or $1050/year
The new waste disposal station located in the Borrow Pit is available at no charge to everyone who rents a space.

Troop 20 Wants You!

Boy Scout Troop 20, chartered by the Big Canoe Chapel in September of 1999, is located in the mountains of North Georgia, just miles from Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The mountains are our backyard and playground! We are home to Scouts from Big Canoe to Bent Tree, from Marble Hill to Ball Ground and the greater Jasper area. Unlike most troops who conduct their meetings in a church, school or office, Troop 20 meets in its own Scout Hut nestled in the woods near Big Canoe.

The mission of the Boys Scouts of America is to prepare young boys to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes. At its core, Scouting is fun with a purpose. Boys don’t join or continue in the Scouting program just for the values – they are here to have fun with their brothers in Scouting at meetings and in the great outdoors.

If you are new to Scouting and between the ages of 11 and 17 or maybe you are a Webelos new to the area and ready to cross over to Scouts, then Troop 20 is the perfect place for you! Come to the Turquoise Table Picnic

The Big Canoe Chapel Women’s Fellowship invites all women to a picnic. And not just any picnic! This event, “Come to the Turquoise Table” Picnic, inspired by Kristin Schell’s book, The Turquoise Table is all about “Finding community and connection in your own front yard”, a quote from her book. The premise is to take the time to sit down with neighbors, friends and soon-to-be friends at an ordinary picnic table (turquoise, of course) and connect over a glass of sweet tea. As a consequence of Kristin’s book, turquoise tables have appeared all across America becoming a symbol of hospitality, a safe place to sit down for a few moments of peace and to create a time for honest comfortable connection with others.

On June 3rd plan to join the fun and fellowship at the beautiful Lodge at Old Mill on Cove Rd. Festivities begin at 11:00 am and end at 1:30 pm. Reservations, which begin on April 28th and end on May 21st, can be made on the Women’s Fellowship website, www.bcchapelwomen.org. The cost for this event is $15, nonrefundable. Space is limited to the first 100 people, so don’t let this fun opportunity pass by. Admission to the picnic includes a mouth-watering lunch: a Cindy Park’s box lunch which includes chicken salad croissant, vegetable pasta, a bag of chips, two chocolate chip cookies and bottled water. The vegetarian option is a pimento cheese sandwich. The Women’s Fellowship is pleased to provide special entertainment by The Bob’s: a mandolin and guitar duo, popular in the North Georgia area. Members of “The Bobs” are Bob Knysz on mandolin, a Big Canoe resident, and Bob Putnam on guitar from Canton, Georgia.

In addition to a scrumptious and entertaining picnic, guests will be given the opportunity to support the BCCWF Women to Women Ministry. A simple but powerful program, Women to Women provides a friend when a friend is needed most. The loneliness caused by the loss of a spouse or debilitating illness can turn a woman’s once-bright life into dark isolation.

Understanding that the heart of the matter is often a matter of the heart, “Women to Women” ministers to these ladies the old-fashioned way – through a caring relationship. Guests attending the picnic are being asked to bring a small gift to help fill the Women to Women Ministry gift bags, delivered to those in need of comfort. Some ideas include lotion, soaps, hand sanitizer, small candles, an encouraging book or anything that might bring a smile.

Fun Filled Learning at Big Canoe Chapel

The Big Canoe Chapel Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be June 7-10. It is open to all children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, rising kindergarteners through rising 6th graders.

Registration is open through June 1st and can be made online at https://www.bigcanoechapel.org/people/children or at the Chapel office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is a $10 fee.

This year’s VBS theme is FOCUS and Kids will have a blast as they discover how to trust in what they CAN’T see because of what they CAN see by putting the FOCUS on God and His amazing plan for them. So, put on the leg warmers and bring out the hair teasers and learn to FOCUS.

The week will end with a special family night on Thursday with hamburgers, hotdogs, and lots of fun activities including bouncy houses and water slides.

The Youth meet on Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in McCormick Hall. The students are gaining a deeper understanding of the Bible as one complete story as they look at the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Children’s Sunday School (K-5th grade) classes meet at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Classes are located downstairs in the Chapel. A Nursery is offered for children younger than kindergarten.

Art Camp is scheduled June 21st – 24 for children 7-9 years old and July 12th -15th for ages 10-13. The camps will meet at the Chapel from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The registration fee is $125.00 for each camp and the children are asked to bring their own lunch and snack.
