Set sail with the Big Canoe Model Yacht Club

Got a bit of Dennis Conner racing through your veins? One of America’s foremost yachtsmen, Dennis knew how to ride and conquer the waves.

You can too!

There’s a model yacht club in Big Canoe that tames the waters of Lake Sconti and you’re invited to join the crew.

You might have a boat to sail or maybe you’re a landlubber who enjoys the flutter of colorful sails reflected on the water. Wherever you might fit, you’re invited to come to the dock at Canoe Lodge every Tuesday at 4 p.m. for open sailing. The fleet will start rounding the buoys on June 1.

COVID-19 kept sailors in port for over a year but now it’s time to meet King Neptune once again.

The Big Canoe Model Yacht Club (BCMYC) was founded in early 2019 to build and sail radio-controlled model boats. Within the first few months, the club grew to over 55 members of enthusiastic men and women within the Big Canoe community. There is currently a fleet of 18 T37 Racing Sloops in various stages of construction. The first sailboats were launched in May 2019.

BCMYC welcomes all types of radio-controlled electrically powered boats and sailboats. However, only the T37 Class RC sailboats may participate in official racing regatta events. Gas-powered boats are not permitted on Big Canoe lakes.

If you’re interested in sailing, building a sailboat, learning how to race a radio-controlled model yacht or just socializing with fun people, you’re invited to the first BCMYC meeting of the year 4 p.m. Thursday, June 3 in the Club Room at the Clubhouse at Lake Sconti.

Potential board candidates seek insights on POA governance

By Bob Mackey

The Election Committee conducted an Information Meeting at the Wildcat Pavilion, Monday afternoon.

The purpose of the meeting was to inform property owners who are considering a run for our board of directors about changes being made to the campaign process.

The most significant development is that this year’s campaign for the board will not begin until October 1st. Previously, campaigning for the board and POA candidate assistance commenced on September 1st, almost three months before ballots are due.

This year’s campaign process will again focus on video recordings carried out by the POA. Recordings will include candidate bios, Q and A’s about current issues in Big Canoe and possibly a round table discussion amongst the candidates. All recordings will be posted to the POA website and homeowners can view them at their leisure.

Candidates will not be required attend and give presentations to a number of BC’s clubs and organizations as has been done in previous election cycles.

Attendees at Monday’s meeting included seven potential board candidates and several current members of our board. An excellent discussion and exchange occurred and helpful information shared. Directors in attendance discussed their roles, commitment, time spent leading Big Canoe and the fulfillment they derive from their time and efforts. Also highlighted was the continued use of ZOOM meetings so that residents who are still employed, or part time residents can attend meetings remotely, when necessary.

The election committee will schedule another Information Meeting, if needed. We invite all interested property owners to contact Bob Mackey at: bobmackey3@gmail.com, or Tim Moran at: tmoran@bigcanoepoa.org.

Filing for candidacy ends at the close of business, June 30th. Candidate packages can be picked up at the POA offices at the Canoe Lodge.

Big Canoe’s Package Porch, your new gathering place for parcel pickup, opens June 1

Long a nagging issue for Property Owners, the storage hassle associated with the Postal Facility is getting some much-needed relief.

Meet the Package Porch.

While delivering an immediate solution to the limitations of the Postal Facility, the Package Porch – in the lower level of the building that houses the Village Station meeting rooms – begs questions about access, available services and how it will work in conjunction with the Postal Facility.

Q: What is the purpose of the Package Porch?
A: With the limit in storage space in the Postal Facility, the POA created a new parcel center that could address perhaps the biggest mail-related issue in Big Canoe. The Package Porch allows for the collection, sorting and storage of all oversized and spillover packages for Property Owners to pick up.

Another challenge to the Postal Facility is that the timing of U.S. Postal employees’ presence varies daily. The Package Porch will have fixed hours weighted toward the afternoon so that when a parcel is ready for pickup, a Big Canoe staff member will be available to retrieve a package.

Q: What are its hours?
A: The new facility will be open from 1-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. These hours were selected in part to give those with daytime commitments the chance to get their packages at the end of their day.

Q: What happens at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 1?
A: A ribbon-cutting, the formal introduction of the facility to the community, and the first chance for Property Owners to pick up packages at the new location.

Q: How is it that the Package Porch, unlike the Postal Facility, can have a fixed schedule?
A: The Big Canoe POA staffs the Package Porch while the Postal Facility is operated by U.S. postal employees who work out of the U.S. Post Office in Jasper. Postal workers at the Postal Facility are in Big Canoe only when they have mail to deliver, which varies but is generally from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Q: Will all my packages get diverted to the Package Porch?
A: Not all of them. Just the overflow and larger parcels that don’t fit in the Postal Facility lockers. You will continue to receive smaller packages – and all envelopes and regular mail – at the Postal Facility.

Q: How will I know I have a delivery at the Package Porch?
A: A claim ticket will be placed in a Property Owner’s Postal Facility mailbox. The packages can then be retrieved by taking the ticket to the package center.

Q: So all I need is the ticket to get my package?
A: You will also be required to show an ID with your slip and to provide a signature when collecting a package.

Q: Did I see pictures of tables and chairs outside of the Package Porch?
A: You did indeed. Whether it was home to a restaurant or a general store, the building has long been an inviting gathering place with its covered porch. Aiming to continue that tradition, the facility will feature four outdoor café tables on the porch to create a place for folks to rest their feet, catch up with neighbors or just hang out.

Q: What was previously in the Package Porch?
A: The lower level of the building across from the Fire Station over the decades has been home to a general store, gas pumps, and an activity center for children. The upstairs area, now known as the Village Station, houses meeting rooms. In the past, the upper level was home to a gift shop and a succession of restaurants serving everything from Italian cuisine to Mexican food.

Q: Who will work in the new center?
A: Big Canoe staffers, led by a 27-year Postal Service veteran, will manage the new facility.

Q: What kind of parking does the new center have?
A: Unlike the hilly parking lot surrounding the Postal Facility, the Package Porch lot has a more forgiving, safer flat surface that will make transporting a big box from the building to a vehicle much easier. The lot has 41 parking spaces, including two with American with Disabilities Act specifications. The addition of newly painted lines designating the parking spaces, along with the installation of new wooden guardrails, was recently completed. Note that some construction equipment and materials – part of the ongoing Creek 9 rejuvenation project – will on occasion share a portion of the lot into the fall.

Q: Is there anywhere I should avoid parking?
A: Please do not park your vehicle in front of the loading dock on the north side of the building.

Q: Can Package Porch staff bring big boxes to my car?
A: Because of a range of issues including liability, Package Porch staff cannot carry packages for Property Owners.

Q: Is the claim slip that arrives in the mailbox the only way to know you have a package?
A: That is the main way we alert you to an arrival. However, we are exploring the possibility of adding alternate means of informing Property Owners of a parcel’s arrival.

Q: Will any additional services be added to the Package Porch?
A: There are no plans in place. For now, the center will just store and distribute the packages.

Please tell us how you like the new Package Porch. And as always, you can let us know by writing to askthepoa@bigcanoepoa.org or by clicking the Ask the POA button on the POA website.

Got something to sell? Looking for something to buy?

By Alice Eachus

Looking for a wild and crazy hat to wear on the Fourth of July? Or maybe you’re searching for an antique clock, pair of lederhosen, dinner dishes for eight or maybe
a trunk of toddler toys.
Strange and wonderful things can be found on the Big Canoe Residents’ Online Exchange Facebook page. The motto of this page is “Natural Beauty: Priceless,
Everything Else for Sale.”
Note the word “Residents’.” All items for sale or to buy are in Big Canoe so they’re easy to pick up right inside our gates. It’s a private site so you’ll have to
request to be a member. That keeps the exchange strictly for those living in our community. At last count, 2,300 Big Canoers were buying and selling like crazy.
Get in on the action and find bargains galore!
Items are well priced; some are offered for free. Porch pick-up is popular and meeting in community parking lots is common.
Check it out. Since charities are no longer collecting usable items on Bulk Trash Day, using the Exchange is a great way to offer your treasures for someone else to
enjoy.
Why not make a few bucks while de-cluttering your manse? That’ll at least get you a big fat ‘burger or mile high ice cream sundae for sure. If you’ve got something
really hot to sell, you might make enough for a trip to see your grands.

Mandolin strings strum in concert on June 13

Bob Knysz has been making music in Big Canoe for many years. Some have enjoyed his musical talents at Big Canoe’s monthly Acoustic Showcase.

But Bob has an alter ego as he’s one of the key players in the renowned Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation out of Atlanta. Not only is Bob musically represented as corporation president and concertmaster, but his talented wife Barbara is also part of the orchestra.

This group of mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, guitars and bass has been creating beautiful music since 1994. The ensemble of strings plays everything from Bach and Mozart to Joplin and the Beatles. Members also compose their own works which are a delight to the ear.

“The concert this year will feature a little bit of many different genres: classical, Americana, turn-of-the-century, jazz and even a few pop medleys that always makes for an interesting concert,” concert master Bob shared.

Bob also shared his thoughts about playing to our community. “Having lived and played music in this wonderful community for over seven years, my wife and I have developed an incredible friendship bond with the music community and so many of the residents here,” he said. “We love it in Big Canoe.”

Over the years, the orchestra has presented a musical treat for all in Big Canoe. This year their concert “Bach to Pop” will be held at the Big Canoe Chapel 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 13 General admission is $15 and can be put on Big Canoe lot charges or paid by cash or check at the door. Checks payable to “Big Canoe Chapel”.

For more information, visit the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra website, www.atlantamandolins.com.

Military always, always plans ahead

It’s just about five months until North Georgia Vets (NGV) take off for the road trip unceremoniously derailed by COVID-19 last year.

NGV is now ready to roll!

A convoy of cars will head to Savannah Oct. 19-22 to be welcomed by the Combat Aviation Brigade Commander, tour a static display of aircraft, test engagement skills using a small arms weapons simulator, visit the 8th Air Force Museum, tour the Green-Meldrim House (Sherman’s HQ during the Civil War), visit Fort Stewart and Fort Pulaski as well as experiencing additional military presentations.

Of course, social times are part of the trip including a stay at Homewood Suites in the Savannah Historic District on the riverfront, a riverboat dinner cruise and grub at the famous Pirate’s House.

Cost is $388 per person for the private touring bus, guided tours and meals, assuming 25 participants sign up. Final cost will be determined based upon participant total. We already have 32 on the trip roster so it’s looking good. Payment will be required in August.

Registration is open to NGV members and their spouses until July 20. The event will be expanded to friends and extended family members until August 20.

For additional information, contact Paul Goldstein at paul.f.goldstein@gmail.com.

Do you have a nomination for Big Canoe’s President’s Award?

Once known as the “Volunteer of the Year” award, the name of the recognition has changed, but the honor remains the same. The award is now known as the President’s Award and is given to an individual volunteer who has made a significant impact or contribution to Big Canoe.PRESIDENTS-AWARD-PHOTO

The success of Big Canoe depends on the contributions of Property Owners serving on POA committees and working with community groups and organizations. Each year the POA honors one outstanding individual for recognition. Property Owners are invited to submit the names of nominees along with an overview of their nominee’s accomplishments here.

The President’s Award will be presented at the July 17 Town Hall meeting. While many volunteer much time to our community, the POA is pleased to honor one special volunteer this year.
