Rain forces AWOL to meet and greet at Wildcat

Information submitted BY Karen Steinberg

News flash – Awesome Women on the Lake (AWOL) aren’t ducks! With a keen eye on the weather forecast, the Big Canoe Marina might not be the best place to meet for the first Monday of the month gathering of AWOL.

So, AWOL ladies are moving under cover to the Wildcat Pavilion when they meet to gab and giggle on Monday, May 3 at 5 p.m. Nothing else has changed. Ladies should bring their beverage of choice and wear a smile, and clothes, of course.

Hope to see you under cover. All women are invited to join the gang, no sign up, just show up.

Turning black thumbs green

By Alice Eachus
Fields of green are forming a strikingly lush scene at the Wildcat Pavilion. This is the day Big Canoe gardeners were “planting” for – the annual Wildflower Bunch Plant Sale.
COVID-19 nipped the sale in the bud last year so anticipation was high to get down and dirty once again.
Hundreds of houseplants, bushes, trees and hanging baskets are creating a canopy of green at Wildcat as vendors make the best of a sunny but cool spring day. Garden decorations fill tables too, adding a touch of whimsy for yards blooming with joy.
The plant sale runs Friday, April 30 until 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Please note that some vendors accept cash or check only.
Don’t miss your chance to dig with some of the most knowledgeable gardeners in Big Canoe and beyond. They would love to share dirt with you and help create your lush landscape to welcome the warm summer months ahead.
Come get so excited you just might wet your plants!

BCAR hosts Open Houses once again

By Alice Eachus

There will be plenty of puppy and kitty kisses passed around on two Saturdays in May – May 22
and 29.

After months of visiting dogs and cats living at Big Canoe Animal Rescue (BCAR) only by
appointment, the kennels will host Open Houses once again.

Open Houses will be scheduled from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the BCAR kennels near the North
Gate.

C’mon over and meet the dogs and cats ready to find “fur-ever” homes with you. They’re so
excited to meet you!

Eagles soar despite misfortune

By Alice Eachus

Hope springs eternal for the American Eagle couple in residence on Eagle Island in the middle of
Lake Petit.

With the nasty storm in late March, their carefully built nest was destroyed along with their
carefully tended eggs. Maybe the eaglets had arrived, we just don’t know for sure, but fierce
wind and rain were too much for them to survive.

Since American Eagles return to the same nesting place year after year, our mom and dad
already started building their nest to prepare for 2022. With their strong beaks and grabby claws,
branches of every size and sort were chosen by the eagles to fortify the large home of wood they
so meticulously create.

Come next winter, the eagles will set up housekeeping once again and hopefully collect a brood
for a nursery we love to watch.
