Yes, we will still celebrate Oktoberfest in Big Canoe

While the Wildcat Playfield won’t be overflowing with colorful cushions of mums, bales of yellow hay, a beer truck the size of Hamburg, and rows of smiling vendors with treasures to offer, all jumping to the sounds of an oompah pah band, Big Canoers can still enjoy the tastes of Oktoberfest.

The Clubhouse will celebrate this annual rite of autumn on October 16 and 17 with a hearty German menu and drink specials. The place will be decorated to the nines to add to the fun as folks either dine-in or order take-out on these days.

The Oktoberfest menu will be announced soon. Clubhouse reservations are definitely required for this Bavarian celebration. Make yours by calling (706) 268-1253. Dig out your lederhosen, guys, and ladies start swirling your skirts. Let the fun begin!

Update on the Wellness Center

Information submitted by Steve Panetta

The Wellness Center continues to accommodate exercisers. Ten people at a time are allowed on the exercise floor, a face-covering continues to be required during workouts. A “Mask Free” zone has been set up utilizing the racquetball court with five pieces of cardiovascular equipment. The pieces have been set 12 feet apart.

Some group exercise classes are back live in the aerobic studio; again, a face covering is required. Some classes are being held outdoors and some remain online. Check with the Wellness Center at (706) 268-3441 to learn where your favorite class is being offered.

Massage therapy is back as well as physical therapy. The indoor pool is offering group exercise classes as well as four lanes open for swimmers. A face covering is required as you check-in at the front desk but may be removed once the natatorium is entered.

Both the pool and exercise area are by reservation only and time slots may be booked the day of or made for the next day. Sessions are booked on the hour for 45 minutes. If there is availability after your scheduled session, you are invited to stay for the next one. Unfortunately, personal training, whirlpool, sauna, and showers have not reopened yet.

Clay tech court conversion has begun

By Linda Powell

The worn and tired clay tech courts at the Racquet Club are being converted to hydro courts. The clay tech courts were worn out and no longer playable. We are excited we will now have six hydro clay courts.

The conversion process will take several weeks to complete. The conversion of these two courts will relieve the crowding we are experiencing at peak playtimes.

Who heats up the courts? Clayton Burns, that’s who

Article and photo by Linda Powell

Clayton Burns has been a tennis member at Big Canoe since 1986 when he and his beautiful bride Lynn purchased their first home here. Clayton has a passion for tennis that is unmatched. He’s one of the most encouraging players ever seen on the courts in Big Canoe. He plays tennis with many and varied players, is always upbeat and is a “glass full” kind of guy.

Over the years, Clayton has seen many changes at the Racquet Club and inside the gates of Big Canoe. His best friend and hitting partner Joe Dodd was one of the first to call Big Canoe home. The guys would spend hours on the courts hitting and socializing as well as spending time together on the golf course.

Clayton plays tennis with all ages, from 19-year-olds up to 89-year-olds.

He has always supported the tennis program and worked to build it by assisting staff any way he can. You might see Clayton, 80 years young, on the golf course or at the Wellness Center as he is extremely active and enjoys all the amenities in Big Canoe.

Clayton, we are honored to have you as a Racquet Club member and look forward to many more years of fun batting the ball.
