Venturing out of bounds

By Alice Eachus

Even with miles of trails winding around Big Canoe, it’s sometimes an adventure to go out of bounds to explore new territory.

The Peterson family, Carl, Dianna and son Christopher recently ventured out to explore Dawson Forest that connects to Big Canoe. There’s a lot of fun to be had when new places are discovered, especially when a husband chases his wife up a tree!

Before the heat of summer stifles even the most dedicated hiker, why not wander our trails and those around us to enjoy the splendor Mother Nature provides?

By the way, does this playful scene remind you of a photo sign in a popular Netflix show?

Behind every knitter is a huge pile of yarn

Photo and information submitted by Mimi Zentgraf

For most of Big Canoe’s year long hiatus, the Knit Togethers have been clicking and clacking their needles to pass the time away.

Some meet in person upstairs at the Beach Club (aka, Swim Club) every Wednesday from 2 – 4 pm. Masks and social distancing are observed. Others join in via a Zoom connection.

Along with fashioning yarn into personal items like afghans, sweaters, shawls and more, the knitters also make baby hats and blankets for local hospitals.

Nimble fingers created more than 300 ear savers for Northside Hospital to make mask wearing more comfortable for the medical staff.

If you’re a knitter or want to learn, contact Mimi Zentgraf at mimizentgraf@gmail.com. She’ll spin you a yarn and welcome you to the club.

Easter Bunny sure made Big Canoe kids ‘hoppy’

Information submitted by Teri Sawyer

That big chunky bunny made an egg-citing stop in Big Canoe the day before he laid colorful eggs all over the world.

A twig woven arch made the perfect place to pose for pictures. (Photo by Teri Sawyer)

The furry guy with pink shaded ears gave out almost 300 bags or boxes of candy along with more than 300 pretty spring flowers.

The Big Canoe Fire Department lined the road to distribute fire safety information and crown the kids with hats to celebrate.

Northside Hospital tossed out an adorable assortment of candy packets from Oh, Sugar! How sweet it is!

Kids and their keepers enjoyed the picture perfect day with Kevin Tillery playing a hip hop collection of tunes to keep the bunny hopping. Photo ops were plentiful as kids posed with the big white fur ball who was most accommodating and listened carefully to Easter wishes.

A big thank you to the resident volunteers, Program & Events Committee and the gaggle of teens who volunteered to make this a memorable day for our kids and grandkids.

Yappy Hour changed to Sunday, April 11

Information submitted by Sherry Evans

Who has a dog named Thunder, maybe Storm or perhaps Raindrop?

Those pup names would be a telling reason the Big Canoe Dog Park Social Club is changing its long awaited Yappy Hour to Sunday, April 11 at 4:30 pm at Wildcat Pavilion.

This is a day for dog lovers to get together to share their funny canine capers, training hints and mishaps and just to yap together. Pups, even on a leash, aren’t invited to this soiree. It’s people only, but feel free to bring your pup photos for bragging rights.

Pet parents are invited to tote snacks and drinks of their choice, although some goodies will be provided along with the soon to be infamous Pawrita. Bet you never enjoyed sipping one of those puppies!

If you can make it, shoot Sherry Evans an email at srevans284@gmail.com so Sherry and her doggone great committee know just how much they should load in their shopping carts.

Arts and Crafts Crawl strolls to a new location

Information submitted by Andrea Fulton

No GPS needed! The Big Canoe Arts and Crafts Crawl is making it easier for folks to enjoy the work of our community artisans. The date set for their feast for the senses is Saturday, April 17 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

The Crawl was set to travel driveway to driveway where dozens of talented folks would set up shop to showcase and sell their wares. But the management of North Gate Station kindly offered the south side of their parking lot for vendors settled in colorful stalls to welcome the community to enjoy touches of whimsy, fine art, plants galore and pottery turned by nimble fingers. There’s a whole lot more to enjoy too.

Not only that, but Sourwood restaurant is offering a delightful and delicious picnic style menu from 12 noon until 2 pm.

What more could we ask for? Well, maybe a smile from Mother Nature to fill sunny blue skies.
