For Wednesday: Clubhouse to unveil dual dining experiences, weekly specials, with fall relaunch

By POA staff

What will it be tonight? The breezy open-air patio eatery where you can watch the big SEC game over fish tacos and burgers? Or a nicer, elevated indoor dining experience with flowers, a white tablecloth, and a curated wine list?

Come Wednesday, Sept. 22, you can have either in a single location: the Clubhouse.

That’s when the Clubhouse unveils its new look built on new dual dining scenarios where patrons can either go casual on the Veranda and the Black Bear Pub; or opt for an elevated dining experience in the Dining Room where wait staff, sporting black shirts and bistro aprons by night, will recommend wine pairings with such chef specials as the saku tuna crisp or filet mignon.

Newly appointed food and beverage manager Jonathan Prince explained that the Clubhouse changes were initiated because of the feedback from patrons. Jonathan and his team, including Chef David Bakitas, this week have coordinated the training, menu revisions and assorted logistics tied to a range of changes.

“I can’t tell you how many times folks in the community have said, ‘Can we get tablecloths in the back dining area,’ ” Jonathan says. “At the same time, they still want to be able to have maybe a group of eight out on the Veranda for something more casual. With our new changes, we can let folks choose the ambiance they want – and all in one place.”

Although the Dining Room, the Black Bear Pub and the Veranda are open for service today through Sunday and again on Tuesday, the new dining experience and updated menu will not go into effect until Wednesday.

While the menu will continue to include such long-time favorites as the Cuban sandwich and sweet and sour shrimp, the Clubhouse will feature three to four new weekly specials. For the kickoff week, patrons can sample the filet mignon, saki tuna crisp, a power salad with kale and quinoa, or a pan-roasted halibut. Often tied to seasonal themes, the specials will change regularly. At a future date, the Clubhouse will expand selections to include both lunch and dinner-specific specials.

Another inspiring rethink is in the revised cocktail menu, which features the Cello Collins, a tangy tweak of the Tom Collins using Villa Massa limoncello; and a honey-fied revamp of the classic Brown Derby cocktail made from bourbon, grapefruit juice and honey simple syrup.

The Pub, which had its floors repaired this week, and the Veranda will continue to operate similarly to how they currently function through the day and into the evening – as a welcoming gathering place that will continue to host events such as the upcoming show by musician Bill Pound at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17.

The most dramatic changes are happening in the dining room, which will offer dishes from the same menu presented elsewhere in the Clubhouse. However, the Dining Room, unlike the Pub and Veranda, will close at 3 p.m., with its last lunchtime seating at 2 p.m.

When the Dining Room reopens to patrons at 5 p.m., it will have a more formal ambiance – more date night than game night – with white tablecloths, candles and flowers on each table and an age limit to those who are 14 years old and up. The recently retrained wait staff dedicated solely to the dining room will trade in their royal blue tops for black shirts and bistro aprons as they recommend the ideal beer or wine pairing for specific food selections. Ultimately, the dual experience will give the community the option of sampling Chef David’s dishes in the setting that makes sense for them.

“These changes, like the elevated dining experience, add another dynamic,” says Jonathan. “In the end, no matter where someone in the Clubhouse decides to dine, we want people to be able to come with their friends, eat some delicious food and have a few rounds served by an attentive, friendly staff.”

Clubhouse dining is available 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday, with last reservations at 6 p.m.; 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with last reservations at 8 p.m.; and 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, with last reservations at 2:30 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

Reservations for the Pub and Veranda can be made by calling (706) 268-1253 or through the Open Table app that appears when logging onto the Big Canoe POA website. As always, staff will do its best to accommodate walk-ins. For now, reservations for dinner in the Dining Room are available only by calling (706) 268-1253.

90 percent of Big Canoe COVID-19 questionnaire respondents report that they are vaccinated

By POA Staff

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the recent Big Canoe COVID-19 vaccination status questionnaire.

This emailed questionnaire enabled Big Canoe to report information not available from any other source – and has been challenging to gather because Big Canoe is in two counties and some Property Owners have received their vaccinations outside of the area.

There were 1,336 total households that reported on the vaccination status of 2,840 individuals. Of that group:

2,558 individuals or 90% said they had been vaccinated
21 individuals, or 0.7%, said they had been partially vaccinated
261 individuals or 9.2% said they had not been vaccinated

The questionnaire’s 48 percent response rate was comparable to that of other Big Canoe surveys, which in recent years have ranged from 40% with the 2019 Chambers Facility Survey to 50% with the 2021 Big Canoe Census.

Individual reporting data from the COVID questionnaire is confidential and has since been deleted.

The CDC lists the following actions as the best mitigation factors to reduce infection or spread of COVID and its variants:

Get vaccinated
Wear a mask
Stay 6 feet away from others
Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated spaces
Wash your hands often
Cover coughs and sneezes
Clean and disinfect
Monitor your health daily

Among the recommendations from the CDC if you are fully vaccinated:

You can resume many activities that you did before the pandemic, but you should wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission to maximize protection from the Delta variant and possibly spreading it to others. If you have a condition or are taking medications that weaken your immune system, you may not be fully protected even if you are fully vaccinated. You should continue to take all precautions recommended for unvaccinated people until advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.
People with moderately to severely compromised immune systems should receive an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine after the initial two doses.
If you are not fully vaccinated and age 2 or older, you should wear a mask in indoor public places. In general, you do not need to wear a mask in outdoor settings. In areas with high numbers of COVID-19 cases, consider wearing a mask in crowded outdoor settings and for activities with close contact with others who are not fully vaccinated.

On Sept. 10, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study monitoring instances of COVID-19 cases. The study found that people who were not fully vaccinated in the spring or summer were more than 10 times more likely to be hospitalized and 11 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than those who were fully vaccinated.

The POA Board policy is that Property Owners are mature, informed individuals who know their general health condition and vaccination status and are fully capable of making decisions in their best interest. It is not a statement that all owners should carry on without restriction in the face of the Delta variant. Rather, individual Property Owners should act responsibly given their risk tolerance. At this time, the POA will not institute a mask mandate for Property owners or guests.

We trust that the questionnaire results provide information that owners will use to govern their choices.

If you are a Property Owner and you did not receive the questionnaire, write to surveys@bigcanoepoa.org to ensure you receive future surveys.

Clubhouse closed today because of positive COVID-19 test

All employees in POA amenities now required to wear a mask

By Scott Auer, POA General Manager

Due to exposure to an individual who tested positive for COVID-19, the Clubhouse is closed today as its employees are tested in the next few days.

As results come back negative, the Clubhouse will gradually reopen and restore services. To ensure the continued safety of Clubhouse guests and staff, the building is in the process of being sanitized.

We’re sure many of you have questions about the closure and the larger situation as it relates to COVID-19. First of all, we encourage you to go to the CDC site at www.cdc.gov to get all your COVID-19 questions answered.

Below are some responses aimed to answer any questions you might have:

Q: I recently dined at the Clubhouse. What should I do?
A: The CDC has extensive information and recommendations for both those vaccinated and unvaccinated at www.cdc.gov

Q: When will the restaurant reopen?
A: As people test negative, they will come back to work and we can gradually restore services. We will provide updates when the restaurant comes back online. Duffer’s will continue food service today and through the weekend from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Q: Are there plans to close any of the amenities or cancel any scheduled weekend events?
A: Because there have not been reported instances of any COVID-19 in any of the amenities, all Big Canoe services will continue to operate as scheduled.

Q: Will a new mask mandate go into effect?
A: Yes – all employees in the amenities are now required to wear masks.

Q: Where can concerned Property Owners get tested?
A: From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, Pickens Urgent Care will offer drive-through rapid COVID-19 testing at the Clubhouse lower parking lot for the first 120 individuals concerned about possible COVID-19 exposure. Masks required. People can drive into the single-file line to get tested in their own vehicle. Cost: $100 per person, cash or check; no insurance coverage. Online reservations for tests can be made through Walgreens (www.walgreens.com) and CVS (www.cvs.com) in Jasper and at Good Samaritan in Jasper (706-253-4673).

Q: Will I have to wear a mask?
A: At this time, the POA will not institute a mask mandate for Property Owners or guests.

The POA Board addressed the subject at the Aug. 26 meeting by saying “the policy is that Property Owners are mature, informed individuals who know their general health condition and vaccination status and are fully capable of making decisions in their best interests. It is not a statement that all owners should carry on without restriction in the face of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 but that they as individuals should act responsibly given their risk tolerance.”

Traffic trailer installed to help keep speeding Big Canoe drivers in check

By Ricky Jordan
Fire Chief

The Big Canoe Department of Public Safety has finally received the long-awaited traffic enforcement unit: a trailer with a mounted mobile radar and messaging sign that posts the speed of oncoming traffic.

The recently installed sign at Wilderness Parkway and Petit Ridge Drive displays an oncoming motorist’s speed and along with the message to “slow down” to those driving up to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. Anyone moving faster than 10 miles an hour beyond the limit will see “too fast” flash on the sign and receive a written citation via mail.

The property owners spoke loud and clear in previous surveys about wanting additional traffic rules and regulation enforcement, so this is just one part of Public Safety’s mission to improve rules enforcement. Traffic complaints are no stranger to our office. Unfortunately, with nearly 100 miles of paved roads to monitor – along with assorted daily emergency and patrol duties taking up our time – our ability to dedicate multiple hours to traffic enforcement is limited. One of our 2021 goals is to improve enforcement and increase patrol officer visibility.

This traffic enforcement unit is as much about improving safety for motorists by encouraging them to change driving habits as it is about citing violators. The newly installed sign is in place all in the name of safety.

Video speed enforcement is not a new concept in the community. We have been using laser or video devices since 2013 to monitor traffic. Prior to 2013, Public Safety performed traffic stops, which were later ruled illegal in the state on private property roadways.

All violators will receive a mailed written citation as has been done in the community for a number of years. The fines, which range from $25-$200, are posted in the rules and regulations section on the POA website.

POA members can access traffic regulation info by signing onto the POA website (www.bigcanoepoa.org) and going to POA > Governing Documents > Rules and Regulation and scrolling down to Vehicle Safety and Control (A.3) on page five.
